ExtensãoThe role of education in the formation of critical individuals able to understand and positioning themselves on current issues of interest to society is widely recognized. Thus, it is necessary schools provide means for the students to reflect and act as protagonists in the society they belong. Environmental conservation is one of the controversial issue of public interest whose understanding is related to the teaching of the natural sciences in schools. In this context, the present project proposes to use animals belonging to the collection of Zoology of the Federal University of Santa Catarina as a tool to relate the contents worked in the class with the challenges present in the students’ daily life and generate questions about the importance of animals to ecosystems, human health and food production. The aim is to bring students from public schools to a critical and comprehensive reflection on the importance of animals and biodiversity in their daily lives.
