Species occurrences

Information on georeferenced occurrences is important to determine the environmental tolerance of a species, and it is also a prerequisite for the development of correlative distribution models. Given the importance of such information, several projects have been dedicated to compile data available in museums and herbaria. Below are some examples of websites that can be used to obtain occurrence data for different taxons:

GBIFGBIF is an international website fundend by governments that compiles species occurrence data from different taxa at the global scale. Data is freely available. GBIF’s vision is “A world in which biodiversity information is freely and universally available for science, society and a sustainable future”.

SpeciesLinkSpeciesLink is a Brazilian website that gathers information on the  biodiversity available in national museums and herbaria. The information contained in speciesLink is freely available. In addition to providing occurrence records , a number GIS-related applications can be downloaded.

DiscoverLifeDiscoverLife gathers information on taxonomy, natural history, distribution, abundance and species ecology at global scale. All data is freely available.

ABELHAThe Scientific Information System on Neotropical Bees is a research platform that facilitates access to scientific information available in different online systems. The platform gathers information on the occurrence records of species of neotropical bees obtained from museums, as well as the year of collection and scientific publications related to the species of interest.
